Biology : Erect robust softly woody annual or biennial herb 1-3 m tall, not aculeate; stems pithy, to 15 mm thick, sparsely pilose at first, later glabrescent with vertical rows of pustules above the leaf-axils which produce curious warty outgrowths on older stems.

Ecology : Marshes; edges of shallow ponds; apparently always local and nowhere abundant; flood-plains; muddy river-banks; lightly wooded (mopane) grassland; growing in up to 1 m of water, mud or thin peat overlying clay; rice-fields; etc...
