Biology : Woody perennial herb, mostly erect but sometimes prostrate, 0,1-1 m tall usually with a thick woody rootstock, but sometimes only a short-lived perennial; stems silky-hairy;

Ecology : Grassland, wooded grassland, Colophospermum and Acacia woodlands and miombo, Themeda-Bulbine savanna (Zaire, to 17OO m ) bushland, scrub, sometimes river banks mostly on sandy soil, and often on rocky ground; rocky grassland, forest edges; etc...
  S. Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Swaziland; Madagascar; Arabia; India, Sri Lanka.
  S. suborbiculata described from S Somalia is a coastal dune form probably best treated as a subspecies, fide Thulin, Fl. Somal. 1: 427, 1993. It does not seem to be identical with the unnamed variant of S. erecta cited by Verdcourt.
  Closely related to S. erecta (See note above). Not yet reported from Malawi but expected there.
