Ecology and distribution
Trop. Afr.
Biology : Woody perennial herb or subshrub, completely prostrate and forming mats, or more often erect 0,1-1,5 m tall or long; stems much branched, glabrescent or with pubescence in a narrow longitudinal line alternating in position from internode to internode;
Ecology : Sandy places, foreshore strand just above loose sand-dunes; coastal meadows and marshes; also roadsides; sea-level.
  Variable in shape of inflorescence, normally dense but elongated in W Africa; and in pubescence of pod (sometimes pubescent in W Africa).
  An unnamed variant from E Africa grading with S. fruticosa is cited by Verdcourt l.c.
  Fodder plant (cattle, horses); has also been grown in Zaire.
  It seems that the species was once widespread and only small pockets are left in E Africa which are being reduced and blurred by hybridization with S. fruticosa (fide Fl. Trop. E. Afr. Legum. 3, Papil. 1: 437, 1971). Introduced in Centr. Afr. Rep.
Biol./Eco : Herb, Shrub; Dry; Anthropic; 0-499 m; distribution: Africa.
