Biology : Perennial mostly erect pubescent or glabrous herb, more rarely with climbing or prostrate shoots, 0,15-1 m tall, from a very woody rootstock whiwh readhes 80 cm in length; usually flowering before the leaves;
Ecology : Grassland, open Combretum woodland with Hyparrhenia or Brachystegia woodland, subject to burning; "burnt over chipya"; marsches (Zaire); 90-2100 m alt. (to 1400 m in Fl. Zambes. area).
