Ecology and distribution

Biology : Erect or decumbent-ascending herb often subacaulescent to 30 cm tall or rarely subshrub with stems 2-45 cm tall arising from a woody rootstock bearing fusiform tubers to ± 15 cm; dark glands present on all parts.
Ecology : Wooded grassland, mixed woodland; dry riverbeds; on Kalahari sand; 900-1200 m alt.
  Subsp. rubro-violacea is maintained as such in Fl. Zambes. (absence of root tubers; with sensitive leaflets).
  Namibia, S. Africa, Botswana.
