Biology : Tree to 8 m, often deformed by fire, with a gnarled, twisted bole; or shrub to 5 m tall with twisted branches; crown spreading;
Ecology : Wooded grassland, woodland; forest in open country; secondary grassland derived from forest in transition zone; brushwood; 300-400-? m alt. - Widespread.
  Variable in the indumentum of lower leaf surface.
  In W Africa its northern limit coincides ± with those of Isolberlinia doka and I. tomentosa. Tolerant to repeated fierce fires. The only species in the genus studied for its reproductive biology (pollination; flowering extending over ± 2 weeks; nig
