Biology : Tree (7,5-)15-25(-40) m, with straight bole 1,5 m in girth, sometimes with short buttresses and often with stilt-roots; branches short, horizontal, whorled (resembling Picea abies), conspicuously crowded with red-berry-like flowers.
Ecology : Rain-forest; watersides in swamp forest (often dominant tree); 200-1900 m alt. S. Tomé. C & S. America; S. Domingo, Jamaica, Dominica Is., Guadalupe, Trinidad.
