Erect annual or perhaps perennial herb 0,5-1,75 m tall, woody at base, branched throughout but not much branched at the base; stems terete, wiry, longitudinally fissured. Variable species (rather numerous synonyms). |

Mostly in rather arid woodland, usually on deep sandy soils (in association with Terminalia sericea, etc.); sometimes on somewhat brackish or alkaline soils (in pans and periodically dry river beds, etc.); mountain slopes; usually 600-1200 m alt. |
