Riverine forest margins; forest clearings, secondary regrowth; woodland, grassland; also grassland thickets; upland rain-forest with Albizia, Macaranga, Croton, Ocotea, forest edge; along rivers and streams; –Widespread |

A variable species; several varieties described from Asia. In Africa rather uniform (perhaps a recent introduction?). Female flowers seem to be rare in collections from Africa, not seen from Ethiopia (fide M. G. Gilbert in Fl. Eth. 3: 424, 1989). |
