Ecology : Mangrove edges, sea-dunes, coastal bushland, not far from high-water mark; in scrub on eroded ground, and particularly on saline or alkaline soils near lakes and seasonal rivers; rocky bushy maritime hilly places;[…]
  Varies considerably over its wide range, but distinctive: length of inflorescences, simple branched, i.e. flowers may be solitary, in pairs, glomerules or cymes; also variable in shape of leaves; male plants may be ± spineless.
  0-1740 m alt.Spineless shoots are easily confused with Salvadora persica (sometimes mixed on herbarium sheets); if fruits are present, the larger ones of Azima are recognizable.A variety pubescens H. Perrier described from Madagascar .
