Biology : Shrub or tree 3-15 m tall, monoecious; stem to 20 cm Ø; young branchlets glabrous, lenticellate; leaves 3-foliolate, glabrous, petiole 5-14 cm long; leaflets papery, large (9-18x3-6 cm), drying blackish purple above, pale brown or reddish beneath.
Ecology : Forest; forest with Cynometra, Khaya, in understorey; island in river in Alchornietum; forest gallery, riversides; 1-1400 m. alt. – Heliophilous.
  Related to A. grandifolius.
