Biologie : Submerged perennial herb with an extensive creeping rhizome; stems 50-200 cm long, cylindrical, strongly branched; leaves all submerged

Ecologie : In lakes and reservoirs (0,5-3 m depth); guelta; to 1200 m (Chad: Tibesti) to 2800 m alt. (Ethiopia).
  Forming hybrids with P. nodosus
  Widespread in temperate and subtropical regions of Europe, Asia and N. America; rare in Australia; known from only 2 localities in the Neotropics: Guatemala, Cuba; recently introduced in Malesia (Sumatra).
