Biologie : Epiphytic, occasionally epilithic or terrestrial herb; pseudobulbs 1-7 cm apart, 1-leafed, orbicular to ovoid, 1-5x0,6-3,3 cm, ± flattened, 2-4-5-angled; leaf petiolate (1-3,5 cm), elliptic or linear-lanceolate, 1,3-21x1-5,5 cm, thick; inflorescence 3,5-84 cm long, 2-105-flowered; peduncle 1,5-58 cm long; rachis 1-40 cm long; bracts recurved, lanceolate(-acute), scarious, 2-10x1-3,5 mm; flowers distichous or scattered, not fully open, purple, or yellowish or greenish suffused with purple; pedicel and ovary 3-10 mm long; sepals lanceolate-acute, 5-15x1,7-3,8 mm; petals linear, oblique, 2-7x0,2-0,6 mm; lip recurved near base, ovate-oblong or linear, 4-12x1-2 mm, margins entire, beset with short and long reddish brown hairs.
Ecologie : Rain-forest; coastal forest; riverine forest; on tree trunks and in central part of crown, on lianes; on Nauclea diderrichii; on bark; in minor humus deposits, on sunny rocks (Angola); 0-1900 m alt.
  Fischer & al. (2010: l.c.) remark that the flowers have an unpleasant smell, like rotten flesh; they are pollinated by flies.
  Comprises 3 vars. (for distinguishing characters, see Vermeulen 1987: 31-36; I. & E. la Croix 1997: l.c.; Stévart 2003: l.c.): - var. saltatorium with short inflorescences (< 8 cm) ± as long as leaves, densely 15-30-flowered, with hairs only in lower half of lip; - var. albociliatum (Finet) J. J. Verm. [bas.: B. calamarium var. albociliatum Finet; syn.: B. distans Lindl.; B. kindtianum De Wild.; B. miniatum F. W. Moore; B. mildbraedii Kraenzl.; B. nudiscapum Rolfe; B. finetii Szlach. & Olszewski; B. graciliscapum Summerh. 1954, non Ames & Rolfe 1915; B. flexiliscapum Summerh.; Phyllorkis distans (Lindl.) Kuntze], with long inflorescences many-flowered and with a thick rim of hairs on the lower half of lip; - var. calamarium (Lindl.) J. J. Verm. [bas.: B. calamarium Lindl.; syn.: B. rupincola Rchb. f.; Phyllorkis calamaria (Lindl.) Kuntze, usually with long inflorescences few- to many-flowered, and with a thick rim of hairs on the lip up to the extreme tip.
