Biologie : Epiphytic, occasionally epilithic herb; pseudobulbs 1-6 cm apart, 2-leaved, ± ovoid, 2-7x0,7-2,5 cm, ± flattened, 3-6-angled, edges often knobby; leaves narrow, elliptic, 4-26x0,5-2,5 cm, thick; inflorescence 6-30 cm long, 4-60-flowered; peduncle erect to patent, 3,5-17 cm long; rachis ± erect, swollen, flattened bilaterally, 1,5-14,5 cm long, 0,2-1 cm wide, margins undulate, often spotted with purple but sometimes greenish marked with purple; bracts ovate, 3,5-7x2-5 mm, membranous; flowers distichous, aligned nearer one side of rachis than the other, whitish or purple, heavily spotted with purple; dorsal sepal linear-lanceolate, 6-15x1-2,8 mm; laterals spreading, triangular, 4-9x2,5-4,5 mm; petals not recurved, linear, 5-14x0,5-1 mm, “clubbed at the tip like a butterfly’s antennae”, curving forwards on either side of the lateral sepals; lip recurved, ovate, 1,5-3x1-2,5 mm, tongue-like, with 2 rounded keels towards base above. – “A striking species with a deep purple rachis” (I. & E. la Croix: l.c.).
Ecologie : Forest; (Brachystegia) woodland; riverine forest; secondary forest; on large branches of trees and trunks 20-30 m above ground level; on Cola sp.; on fallen tree; on large rocks in montane grassland; on lava; 0-2600 m alt.
  Variable species: in width of rachis; in size of bracts and flowers.

  Comprises 2 subspp.: - subsp. sandersonii [syn.: B. melleri Rchb. f.; B. tentaculigerum Rchb. f.; B. pusillum (Rolfe) De Wild.; B. mooreanum Robyns & Tournay; B. bibudiense Schltr.; Megaclinium tentaculigerum (Rchb. f.) T. Durand & Schinz; M. melleri Hook. f. ex Rchb. f.; M. pusillum Rolfe], with flowers placed on an excentric line on rachis, bracts narrow, flowers purple or blotched with purple, occurring in E part of range (not W of Cameroon); - subsp. stenopetalum (Kraenzl.) J. J. Verm. [syn.: B. minus (De Wild.) de Wild.; B. rhodopetalum Kraenzl.; Megaclinium minus De Wild.], with flowers placed on a median line of rachis, bracts wide, flowers white, green or orange hardly marked with purple, lip with 2 sharp keels, occurring in W part of range, E to Zaire-Rwanda-Burundi.
  Closely related to B. scaberulum (tepals different). Sterile specimens are difficult to distinguish from B. maximum, B. scaberulum.
