Ecologie : Marshy grassland and meadows; vleis; seasonally flooded dambos; bogs; savanna relicts in semi-decidous forest; dryish swamp forest; swamp forest margins; well-drained sandy places; in wet conditions, often by lakes and rivers; in full sun; can form large colonies; 0-2500 m alt.
Variable in flower colour and degree of development of the callus. With some local varieties that need not taxonomic recognition (Fl. Trop. E. Afr., l.c.).
Pollinated by beetles and bees (Peter in Orchids S. Africa 34: 89, 2003; Peter & Johnson in Bot. J. Linn. Soc. 171: 716, 720, 2013; both with photographs). Symbiotic seed germination reported from Kenya (Ochora & al. in Syst. Geogr. Pl. 71: 587, 2002).
  E S. Africa, N Botswana, Namibia ?
When cultivated the plant needs a very deep pot as the rhizome grows 10-50 cm the year (Fibeck & Phiri in Orchidee Hamburg 52: 51, 2001). The species had “become a ‘commercial’ orchid during its flowering season in May and June, large bunches of flower spikes can be bought in the Market at a moderate price” (Piers, Orchids E. Afr., ed. 2: 167, 1968).
