Biologie : Terrestrial herb 30-90 cm tall; tubers testicular, 1,5-3 cm long; sterile stem with 1-3 leaves, sheaths red-spotted; flowering stem with cauline imbricate lanceolate leaves 4-8x1-1,5 cm, basal leaves to 30x1,5 cm with free blade; inflorescence cylindrical, 5-25 cm long, densely many-flowered; flowers facing down, 8-15 mm Ø, white with green sepals spotted with purple; bracts lanceolate, acuminate, 15-20 mm long, overtopping flowers; pedicel and ovary erect, c. 10 mm long; dorsal sepal elliptic-ovate, hood-like, 6x4-5 mm, with spur 9-11 mm long from a conical base, cylindrical, first horizontal, then decurved; lateral sepals oblong, obtuse, 5-7x3,5 mm, deflexed; petals oblong, 4,5-5x1,5-2 mm, erect, inside hood; lip elliptical-spathulate, 3-5x1,3-2 mm.
Ecologie : Wet grassland; swamp, bog, vlei, marshy ground; 1900-2300 m alt.
  “Very close to D. hircicornis, and may prove to be better treated at varietal rank under it” (Fl. Zambes. 11/1: 181, 1995). It “has at times been considered a colour variant” of D. hircicornis (la Croix & al., Orchids Malawi: 123, 1991).
  Plant quite distinct when fresh; herbarium material can be difficult to determine with certainty. In D. hircicornis the flowers are purple, and the lip < 1,3 mm wide.
