Biologie : Epiphytic herb; pseudobulbs 2-8 cm apart, 1-leafed, ellipsoid, sharply 4-angled, 1,2-4x1-2 cm, yellow green with characteristic purple marks between angles; leaf elliptic, 3-14x1,5-3 cm; inflorescence 13-43 cm long, 14-36-flowered, erect but bent down sharply where the rachis joins the peduncle; peduncle 11-32 cm long; rachis 4-angled in cross section, 2-11 cm long, reddish brown; bracts triangular, 3-5x2,5-4 mm; flowers distichous, not fully open, greenish with maroon or entirely maroon, lip purple; sepals ovate, 4-6x2-3 mm; petals oblong, 2-3x0,5-1 mm; lip very fleshy, recurved, ovate, c. 3x1,5-2 mm, verrucose, irregularly furrowed, “brain-like”.
Ecologie : Evergreen forest, often riverine, on Syzygium cordatum; forest plantations; sometimes high-rainfall Brachystegia woodland; forming colonies on Acacia lahai in more open woodland; on (bare) tree trunks; very local; 0-2400 m alt.
  A possible hybrid with B. elliotii reported from Tanzania (see above under B. elliotii).
