Biologie : Terrestrial robust herb 30-105 cm tall, glabrous; tubers ellipsoid-fusiform, 2,5-5,5x0,8-1,7 cm; sterile shoot 10-12 cm long, 2-5-leaved; the lowermost leaves tightly sheathing, the upper 1-2 lanceolate, 10-47x2-8 cm; flowering stem entirely covered by 7-11 appressed sheaths 6-16x1,5-4,5 cm, decreasing in size upwards; inflorescence cylindrical, 8-32x2-4 cm, densely 20-40-flowered; flowers curved outwards, orange-yellow or -red to flame-coloured, rarely white; bracts 15-35 mm long, reflexed; ovary curved, 10-13 mm long; tepals decurved; dorsal sepal oblong, 6-11x2-3 mm; laterals similar but wider; petals lanceolate, similar; lip very convex, 6-14x6-12 mm, thick-textured, apex reflexed, mouth wide; spurs slender, 10-17 mm long, parallel to ovary.
Ecologie : Grassland, often in well-drained areas but also in damp places; open bushland; 1500-2700 m alt. – Growing with, e.g., Digitaria diagonalis, Erica benguelensis, Hyparrhenia spp., Satyrium coriophoroides, S. sphaeranthum, Themeda triandra.
  Closely related to S. neglectum. Hall (1982: 86), Agnew (1994, 2013), and Stewart & Campbell (1996: 159) include S. sceptrum in S. neglectum subsp. woodii, but “in the field the species are readily distinguished, not only by the colour but by the aspect of the flower, the lateral sepals in S. sceptrum being decurved while in S. neglectum they are spreading and lie beside the lip” (Fl. Zambes. 11/1: 209, 1995). Pollination (by sunbirds) observed by Johnson & al. (Pl. Syst. Evol. 292: 98, 2011, with fig. p. 99).
