African Plant Database

The database currently comprises 197053 names of african plants with their nomenclatural statuts. Data capture, edition and broadcast are the product of a collaboration between the South African National Biodiversity Institute, the Conservatoire et Jardin botaniques de la Ville de Genève, Tela Botanica and the Missouri Botanical Garden

Data are based on:

  • Tropical Africa: J.-P. LEBRUN & A. L. STORK (1991-2012). Enumération des plantes à fleurs d'Afrique tropicale et Tropical African Flowering Plants: Ecology and Distribution, vol. 1-7. Conservatoire et Jardin botaniques de la Ville de Genève.
  • Southern Africa: G. GERMISHUIZEN & N.L. MEYER, eds, (2003). Plants of Southern Africa: an annotated checklist Pretoria.
  • North Africa: DOBIGNARD, A. & C. CHATELAIN (2010-2013) Synonymic and bibliographic index of North Africa plants. vol. 1-5.
  • Madagascar: Catalogue of the Vascular Plants of Madagascar. Missouri Botanical Garden, St. Louis.

Data are updated on a regular basis, following the literature.Any information on missing or corrections is most welcome.
Names and synonymy are used as the nomenclatural backbone for the "African Plants Initiative" (Aluka, Andrew W, Mellon Foundation) and used by many other projects.

Queries can be performed on the complete name, including authors, but can also be done on family. Information on data, standards, processes, maps
