Department of Herpetology and Ichtyology

Collections of fishes, amphibians and reptiles got started with the creation of the Museum in 1820, even if the department formally exists only since 1971, when a large section comprising all the vertebrates was divided in a department of mammalogy and ornithology, and a department of herpetology and ichthyology. Since then, this department has been successively ran by Volker Mahnert, Beat Schätti, Jean Mariaux, presently curator of the department of invertebrates, and Sonia Fisch-Muller.

Our collections consist of about 130,000 lots or specimens of fishes, amphibians, and reptiles, among which 370 types of fishes 122 holotypes, and 1639 types of amphibians and reptiles, 132 primary types.
