Founded in 1822, the Paris Evangelical Mission Society arrived in Tahiti in 1863 to “propagate the faith”. In 1866, Pastor Charles Viénot (1839-1903) opened in Papeete the first Indigenous Protestant school in Polynesia. Its aim was to provide an education that was both practical and general and to train primary school teachers. In this photograph, one can see the carpentry and wood-turning workshop in the school grounds. R. Colombo-Dougoud/MEG
