The ancient Polynesians had perfected very sophisticated weaving techniques enabling them to make rigging and sails for pirogues as well as coverings, mats, screens, objects of finery, hats, baskets, fans and clothes. After colonization, this technique was adapted to correspond to new needs. Missionaries made it compulsory to wear hats to Christian services. This comparative plate illustrates weaving techniques for straw hats and the different plant fibres used. R. Colombo-Dougoud/MEG
