In 1858, Captain Charles Fairholme of the Royal Navy, who had accompanied Muhammad Bahādur Shāh (1775-1862), the last Mughal emperor, into exile in Burma received this bracelet from the latter. In March 1957, Mrs Howson-Dewitt, the granddaughter of C. Fairholme, gave the object to T. S. Raman, at the time a major Indian figure in international organizations. The bracelet was part of
a precious donation given to the Museum of Ethnography by Charlotte Raman, known as "Himavati" and wife of the high-ranking civil servant. D. Kunik/MEG
