Establishing a Dialogue

Sensitive objects from the permanent exhibition

For many years, Indigenous Peoples and local communities have been requesting that sensitive objects, such as Ancestral Remains and certain sacred objects, no longer be exhibited in museums without their consent.

In accordance with article 12 of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (2007), since July 2020 the MEG has removed several sensitive objects from showcases in the “Archives of Human Diversity” exhibition. Their images have also been taken off the museum collections’ database available for online consultation.

Several consultations are in progress with the communities concerned in order to obtain their consent to be able to continue exhibiting these sensitive objects, enable them to access the collections and begin discussions on their repatriation if it is officially requested.
