René Fuerst collection (1933-)

René Fuerst defines himself as an indigenous ethnologist, specialising in the Amazonian Indians, whom he visited from 1955 to 1975, notably as a member of the International Red Cross fact-finding missions in 1970. He was commissioned by the Musée d'ethnographie de Genève to carry out several fieldwork projects among the Indians of Upper Xingú between 1961 and 1969, before being appointed curator of the Oceania collections from 1983 to 1998. Since then, René Fuerst has continued his fight for the indigenous cause through several associations. In 2022, he donated to the MEG all of his photographs taken in Alto Xingú in 1955, a collection that constitutes an invaluable testimony to the populations of this then still unexplored region.
