Biology : Shrub or tree 1,5-7(-10,5-?12) m tall often densely tangled and several m wide; young stems square; spines (modified young branches) sometimes present and up to 3,5 cm long.

Ecology : Temporarily flooded rocky river courses in dry country; riverine thickets, also riverine forest, cliffs, rock-crevices, etc.; near waterholes; coastal bushland; ± 2-1400 m alt.;
  Seychelles, Madagascar, Comoro Isl.; Egypt, Libya; Middle East; China, Pakistan, India, Indochina, Malesia to Australia.
Biol./Eco : Shrub, Tree; distribution: Naturalised in Madagascar.
