Biology : Stems 0,5-1,2 m long, with upper leafy, unwettable part floating at the water surface; or sometimes creeping on mud; rhizome rooted; leaves papillose-glandular; flowers unisexual, solitary in leaf-axils.

Ecology : Artificial ponds and lakes; still shallow waters near river banks; 900-1650 m alt. Native of tropical and subtropical S. America; naturalized in Europe (SW France), E tropical Africa through to S. Africa; Malaysia, Japan; Australia; N. America.
  In Africa presumably escape from aquaria.
