Biology : Large evergreen tree, 30-50 m, with an irregular crown and a clean bole to 30-40 m height, 1,2 m ?and 3 m in girth; trunk often with high buttresses, sometimes spiny, continuing upwards as twisted fluiting.

Ecology : Semi-deciduous or evergreen rain-forest; humid forest; lowland river-valley alluvium, and sometimes in sublittoral forest (Angola); in very mixed associations; on clay-rich substrates; to 1200 m alt.
