Biology : Tussocky perennial herb; leaf-rosettes conspicuously woolly in the centre, growing in clusters from a branching rhizome

Ecology : Marshy places in open grassland; open parts of peat bogs; swampy or muddy margins of lakes, rivers and streams; leaf rosettes sometimes submerged in shallow water; locally dominant; roadside; sources; often with Sphagnum; 1000 (? and less)-2200 m alt.
  Populations from Zambia southwards have leaves with markedly incurving tips, whereas more northern populations (S. chevalieri) have leaves curving outwards. Comprises 2 vars.: - var. wahlbergii; - var. sinkabolensis
  S. wahlbergii may hybridise with S. schlechteri
  S. Africa.
