Biology : Shrub or climber, to 8 m; stems (sub-)erect, curved or scandent, ± succulent, strongly thorned, emerging from a succulent, ± warty, subglobular or irregular lumpy trunk to 2,5 m; thorns 0,5-8 cm long, at base 2-8 mm , with apex woody, acute.
Ecology : Scrub savanna; rocky and stony places; on sandy or blackish soil; Commiphora-Acacia bushland; evergreen woodland; (1-)100-1900 m alt. Comprises 3 subspp.
