Biology : Terrestrial herb 20-100 cm tall, glabrous in lower part of stem, minutely glandular below and along inflorescence axis; tubers cylindrical, woolly; leaves numerous, stiff, rigid, closely overlapping, lanceolate, acuminate, 6,5-8x2-2,5 cm, glabrous; inflorescence 13-35 cm long, dense to lax, c. 5 cm Ø; flowers in various shades of purple or mauve, purple-spotted; bracts lanceolate, acute, 4x1 cm, glabrous; pedicel and ovary 10-20 mm long; sepals rotundate-ovate, cochleate, 4,5-11x2-5,8 mm; petals obliquely oblong-ovate, 6-10x3-7 mm, upright; lip broadly ovate-lunate, 13-19x4-5 mm, base large and boat-shaped, apex 3-lobed with keel along midvein, mid-lobe upcurved, sometimes longer than the falcate side lobes.
Ecology : Terminalia or Isoberlinia open savanna woodland; Combretum woodland; stony grassland; depressions in steppe; dry dambo; sandy plain not very boggy; edge of small lake in grass; in short grass or long grass and among scrub; in low grass vegetation with scattered Acacia; open bush; secondary scrub; pasture; gallery forest by stream; stream bank in open country; Eucalyptus planted grassland; transition between wetland and bamboo stands and in bamboo stands; 500-2250 m alt.
  Comprises 3 subspp., 2 in our area: - subsp. ovata (syn.: B. allisonii Rolfe) in S. Africa, Swaziland (icon.: Linder & Kurzweil, Orchids south. Afr.: 82, pl. 67, 1999); - subsp. schweinfurthii (Rchb. f.) Summerh. [bas.: B. schweinfurthii Rchb. f.; syn.: B. schweinfurthii var. nigerica Braid; B. ovata var. schweinfurthii (Rchb. f.) Szlach. & Olszewski; B. grandis Kraenzl., incl. var. ugandensis (Schltr.) Braid and var. sudanensis Braid; B. ugandensis Schltr.] a large plant in the savanna belt N of the Congo Basin, from Senegal to Kenya-Tanzania; - subsp. welwitschii (Rchb. f.) Summerh. [bas.: B. welwitschii Rchb. f.; syn: B. ovata var. welwitschii (Rchb. f.) Szlach. & Olszewski; B. acutiloba Rendle], 20-60 cm tall with lax inflorescence, in the savanna region S of the Congo Basin, from Burundi/Zaire to Tanzania, Angola-Zimbabwe. – Only one, variable, species was recognized by Geerinck in 1984.
