Ecology and distribution

Biology : Terrestrial herb 10-45 cm tall, glabrous except tubers; tubers 1-2, ellipsoid, 0,8-1,8x0,5-1 cm; leaves 5-16, the lowermost 3-9 forming a basal tuft, spreading; the largest leaf (linear) 1,5-6x0,2-0,8 cm; inflorescence dense, to c. 3 cm long, 1-9-flowered; bracts leafy, ovate, 6-20 mm long; pedicel and ovary 10-28 mm long; flowers yellow orange; dorsal sepal broadly ovate, 6-12x4-10 mm, acute; laterals deflexed, 5-11x2-4 mm, lanceolate; petals erect, entire, 5-11x1,5-3 mm, adnate to dorsal sepal; lip 5-12 mm long, with tooth-like (side) lobes at base; midlobe ligulate, 2 mm wide; spur 9-15 mm long, ± pendent.
Ecology : Brachystegia, miombo and other woodlands, on stony soil; pebbly grassland; grassy slopes; in shallow soil between, and overlying moist rocks or lava pavements; in shallow clay loam over laterite; rocky forest clearing; meadows with scattered trees and bushes; between gneiss boulders; 0-2350 m alt.
  The species has been divided into 3 subspp., based on number of basal leaves, their length, and on the aspect of the side lobes of the lip; subsp. crocea occurring at lower altitude, viz. 0-360 m. Subsp. montis-elgon occurs in N part of range.
