Biology : Terrestrial herb 60-100 cm tall, robust; tubers potato-like in a short chain, flattened, 3,5-6x2-5 cm; leaves 2-4, developing after anthesis, fleshy, linear, 18-60x1-3 cm; inflorescence peduncle purplish, with 4-6 sheaths; rachis 9-25 cm long, laxly 6-20-flowered; flowers large, yellow and red, sepals purple-brown; bracts linear, acute, 8-14 mm long; pedicel and ovary arched, 10-20 mm long; sepals lanceolate, reflexed, 8-14x4-6 mm; petals orbicular, 12-20x13-19 mm; lip 11-20 mm long, 3-lobed, difficult to flatten; side lobes rounded, erect; mid-lobe convex, elliptic-obovate; callus of 5 fleshy rugulose ridges; spur purplish, conical, pendent, with broad mouth, 11-19 mm long (in E. schweinfurthii 8-9 mm), apex straight or decurved (in E. schweinfurthii upcurved); fruit pendent.
Ecology : Grassland; wooded grassland; woodland; Brachystegia or Combretum-Terminalia woodland; dry forest; edge of forest; swamp; bamboo thicket; scrub; on rocky ground, on granite; 900-2350 m alt.
  In cultivation for a long time under the name E. bella (Burkill, l.c.). Resembling E. schweinfurthii (see differences above), and included under E. orthoplectra by, e.g., Agnew (o.c.). Allied to E. streptopetala.
