Terrestrial slender herb 10-65-81 cm tall; tubers ellipsoid, 1-3,5x0,4-1,3 cm; sterile shoot to 6 cm tall, 3-5-leaved; 1-3 lower leaves sheath-like, the others lanceolate, 3,5-22x1-9 cm; flowering shoot with 3-9 imbricating leaf sheaths, lanceolate, 2,5-10x1-3 cm; inflorescence 4-30 cm long, 3-60-flowered; flowers curved outwards, white to pink, veins deeper coloured, sweet scented; bracts deflexed, ovate, 10-35x6-12 mm, pinkish; ovary 8-15 mm long; sepals free almost to base, recurved distantly; dorsal sepal elliptic, 9-13x1-3 mm; laterals 5-14x3 mm; petals narrowly elliptic, 9-13x3 mm, margins ciliolate; lip very convex, hooded, ovoid, 8-13x10-12 mm, margins shortly hairy; spurs 22-46 mm long, tapering, parallel to ovary. |

Pollination studied by Johnson & al. (Pl. Syst. Evol. 292: 97, 2011).
A hybrid with S. neglectum subsp. neglectum has been named S. x fibeckii (See under that name). Another putative hybrid, with S. neglectum subsp. woodii, is listed by Hall (1982: 135) and considered as S. rhodanthum Schltr. by him, maintained as a separate species by Linder & Kurzweil, Orchids south. Afr.:174,177, 1999.
Very close to S. buchananii Schltr., and some plants in Zimbabwe seem to be intermediate. The two species are perhaps conspecific. |
