Ecology : Grassland, grassy meadows; stony hillsides; rock crevices; 1230-3100 m alt.
Pollination studied by Johnson & al. (Pl. Syst. Evol. 292: 97, 2011). A hybrid with S. neglectum subsp. neglectum has been named S. x fibeckii (See under that name). Another putative hybrid, with S. neglectum subsp. woodii, is listed by Hall (1982: 135) and considered as S. rhodanthum Schltr. by him, maintained as a separate species by Linder & Kurzweil, Orchids south. Afr.:174,177, 1999. Very close to S. buchananii Schltr., and some plants in Zimbabwe seem to be intermediate. The two species are perhaps conspecific.
