Biology : Shrub or tree, 2-12 m tall, ramose from near the base; trunk ± winged at base; young branches four-angled or subwinged.
Ecology : Fringing and gallery forest; swamp with Cyperus papyrus; swamp on peat; Syzygio-Phoenicion; to 1700 m alt. Comprises 2 vars. S. Africa.
