Biology : Evergreen tree 6-25 m, buttressed at base; sometimes flowering as a shrub 1-5 m tall; bark blackish, smooth; leaves shiny, glabrous; fruit edible.

Ecology : Rain-forest; fringing forest and various types of coastal forest; forest in lower slopes of mountains; "in Mozambique one of the most characteristic and abundant trees in dense semi-deciduous forest at low altitudes dominated by Pteleopsis myrtifolia etc.
