Biology : Perennial climber or trailer to 20 m long; rootstock tuberous; young stems herbaceous, becoming perennial, eventually woody with thin papery bark when older.

Ecology : Deciduous bushland, woodland and wooded grassland, dry evergreen forest and evergreen woodland; common in riverine and alluvial areas; 0-2350 m alt. Arabia, from Pakistan to Hainan, Taiwan; Malaysia, tropical Australia, Fiji;
  introduced into the West Indies and tropical S. America; escape from cultivation in Mozambique.
