Biology : Terrestrial, sometimes lithophytic herb to 60 cm tall, inconspicuous; with a chain of aerial pseudobulbs, green or reddish brown, wrinkled, conical, varying in size, e.g. 3x2 cm or 6x1 cm, with fleshy brittle roots from base; leaves absent at anthesis, linear-acuminate, distichous, 17-40x0,7-1 cm, with broad sheathing base; inflorescence usually 1-4-branched, from upper nodes of pseudobulbs, laxly 6-50-flowered, c. 25 cm long; peduncle stout, 16-21 cm long, with 2-3 sheaths; flowers slightly drooping, not opening widely, olive-brown to yellow-green, lip greenish with brown spots, lasting for only a short time; bracts linear, 2-16x1,5 mm; pedicel and ovary 9 + 5 mm long; sepals ± linear, acute, 8-10x1-2 mm; petals similar, 6-9x1,5-2 mm, all projecting forwards; lip oblanceolate, 7-10x1,5-2,5 mm, virtually unlobed, with 5-7 longitudinal lines of papillose lamellae, margins erose and inrolled; spur cylindrical, incurved, 4-6 mm long; fruit pendent, large, 25 mm long.
Ecology : Dry miombo and mixed deciduous woodlands and associated grassland; Brachystegia-Uapaca woodland, on sandy soil and on rocks; grassy areas among rocks; dambo; often following annual bush fires; 60-1500 m alt.
