Ecology and distribution

Biology : Terrestrial herb 25-55 cm tall, with subterranean to partly aerial moniliformous rhizome of corms/pseudobulbs ± compressed irregular globose; leaves thinly textured, fascicled, produced after anthesis, linear, to 45x2 cm, with small purple spots; inflorescence laxly 7-25-flowered, bracts lanceolate, 5-6 mm long; flowers yellowish green, sometimes tinged purple; pedicel and ovary 16-17 mm long; sepals oblong-oblanceolate, 13-16x2-5 mm; petals similar, 12-13x3,5-5 mm, spreading; lip 12-15x7,5-11 mm, 3-lobed in apical 1/3; mid-lobe oblong, apiculate, c. 5x3-5 mm; side lobes c. 8 mm long, erect, partly joined to column foot; with crests formed of thin lamellae on main veins of lip; spur blunt, 3-5 mm long.
Ecology : Among granite boulders or rocky outcrops on slopes under Brachystegia spiciformis; in sandy soil over granite rocks; dry bushveld, in shade of bush clumps; on Kalahari sand on a lime horizon, brack desert soils, black clay, ferruginous lateritic soils, podsols; arid thorn savanna; very localized, growing in small colonies; 1075-1700 m alt.
  Resembling some forms of E. hians.
  Namibia, Botswana, S. Africa.
  Collected for food and horticulture; cultivated.
