Trop. Afr.
Biology : Subshrubby erect herb 0,6-2 m tall from a woody rootstock; stems annual, ridged, hairy or with lines of appressed hairs along the ridges and pubescent in between; flowers and leaves simultaneous.
Ecology : Deciduous woodland; rocky places or outcrops; grassy savannas or wooded; termite mounds; miombo woodland; wooded tall-grassy meadows; 1350-1600 m alt.
  A variant occurs in Ghana. In Central Africa there is a good deal of variation.
