Biology : Usually a tree 3-4,5 m but sometimes to 12-15 m; trunk with corky dark grey bark armed with stout prickles slightly recurved from a woody base; flowering usually when leafless; branches tortuous; flowers large, red, conspicuous.
Ecology : Burned savanna; marigot edges; plateau with fine gravel; degraded regrowths; sandy colluvium; coastal savanna in Ghana; near sea-level to 1200 m alt.
  Commonly planted as a hedge.
