Biology : Much-branched evergreen, spiny shrub or tree to 4-6 m tall, usually branching from c. 1 m height; crown round, intricatly branched; spines 2-10 cm long, narrow at base.

Ecology : Xeromorphic tree and shrub savanna; dry hilly places, usually in company with Capparaceae; wooded slopes along rivers; in littoral regions (subsp. angolensis); to 400 m alt. N Namibia, Botswana (subsp. welwitschii: isolated record).
