Biology : Very spiny, evergreen shrub or tree to 10 m tall, usually of dense bushy habit; spines 1-3(-5) cm apart and placed 0,5-1,5 cm above leaf axil, 3-10(-13) cm long, ...; inflorescences generally on the spines; fruit edible.

Ecology : Acacia bush or open woodland, in which B. glabra may be an important element; usually on loamy to clay soil, black cotton soil, sometimes stony or sandy soil, or on lava; persisting in degraded communities with Opuntia; 900-1700 m alt.
  Wide discontinuity in the two main areas of distribution.
