Biologie : Terrestrial herb 2-13 cm tall, glabrous except tubers; tuber subterranean, ± globose, 0,6-1,5 cm Ø, 2-4-noded; leaf 1, appearing after flowering, ± prostrate, blade to 5 cm above litter surface; petiole 0-5 cm long; blade cordate-reniform, 1,8-5,5x2-6,5 cm, uniformly (olive-)green above and green or purple beneath (var. adolphi), or green tesselate with silver and purplish grey beneath (var. seposita); inflorescence scape erect, 1-flowered, lengthening to 8,6-21 cm when fruiting; bract 1,5-5-10 mm long; flower small, ± horizontal, with scent of lilac (Syringa); sepals and petals spreading, linear-lanceolate, c. 10-22x3-4-7 mm, brownish green, closing after c. 8 hours anthesis; lip oblong, c. 9-20x4-7 mm, 3-lobed, white to pinkish with purplish papillate markings; side lobes short, clasping column; midlobe ovate, 3-10 mm long, with convex central ridge, margin incurved; fruit cylindrical, c. 7-10x4-5 mm.
Ecologie : (High rainfall) woodlands; bush in savanna; grassland; rain-forest; riverine fringe forest, gallery forest; thicket patches; old termitaria; pine plantations; often on wet slimy soil; moist forest, swamps, damp places; 900-1900 m alt. – Usually forming large colonies, often in association with Nervilia kotschyi, N. shirensis, N. simplex, N. stolziana.
  The correlation between leaf morphology and flower morphology is not absolute: most combinations between flower and leaf varians are known (cf. Fl. Zambes. 11/1: 257, 1995).
