Constitué d'une boule hérissée de piquants, imitant la forme du fruit du pandanus, ce type de massue était employé au cours de combats rapprochés; la pointe donnait le coup de grâce en perforant le crâne de l'adversaire terrassé. Les Européens l’ont appelée «massue ananas» à cause de sa ressemblance avec le fruit, mais sa production est bien antérieure à l’introduction de l’ananas aux îles Fidji.
