Le roi de Siam Chulalongkorn fit présent de ce somptueux ensemble d’orfèvrerie à l’État genevois en 1897.
Il marquait par-là l’importance accordée au projet de traité de commerce et d’amitié entre la Suisse et son royaume.
Le roi était venu négocier ce traité en personne au cours d’un voyage destiné à éviter à son pays la colonisation et à s’inspirer du modèle européen pour sa modernisation.
Selon la volonté du donateur, ce service rejoignit au Musée des arts décoratifs un autre ensemble à signification historique, «l’Argenterie de l’Alabama», commémorant un arbitrage entre les États-Unis et la Grande-Bretagne.
Après un bref passage au Musée d’art et d’histoire, auquel les collections du Musée des arts décoratifs furent intégrées en 1910, le service du roi du Siam fut transféré au Musée Ariana, d’où il fut dispersé vers 1940 entre le MEG et le MAH.
Sa récente reconstitution est le signe d’un nouvel intérêt accordé à ce cadeau diplomatique.

Ethnography and international relations
Diplomatic gifts are often made of “typical” objects. They refer to a self-image more or less stereotyped, which was highly integrated and/or known expected. Generally rooted in the past, this picture supports the idea of continuity of people through their traditions. It contributes then to the legitimacy of nations. Its close links with the League of Nations have earned MEG many of these political donations.
