Geolocate the object
This astonishing object constructed like a music box is one of a rich collection of wooden and terracotta toys, some of which are ingeniously articulated. On the upper balcony, the bride and groom are presiding over the banquet, saluted down below by a group of dancers and guests sitting at the tables. They are facing the crowd to thank the guests and play their role as the married couple hosting the ceremony.

Welcoming and sharing

In rural communities, hospitality is a right and a duty. Social interaction through sharing food and drink follows well-established rituals. This highly codified way of being together, regarded as a sign of civilisation, ensures respect and formality in the relationship between the people gathered around the table.

A festive spirit

Marriage is a ritual and a legal act whose significance varies from one place and time to another. It celebrates a rite of passage and is also an exceptional opportunity for hospitality. Accompanied by lavish amounts of food and drink, singing and games, it reveals the couple's social and financial status. The community expresses jubilation, offers protection and its wishes for fertility.
