Ces chopes aux anses zoomorphes apparaissent à la fin du 18ème siècle et restent utilisées jusqu’au début du 20ème. Le mot Ølhøne se compose de deux termes qui signifient bière et poule, car normalement des volatiles y étaient représentés. On peut l’utiliser comme bol individuel, le faire circuler autour de la table de buveur en buveur, ou bien s’en servir comme récipient de service.
Objet emblématique de la culture populaire il est présent dans des nombreuses collections publiques et privé et des reproductions modernes sont sculptées à l’intention des touristes et des amateurs.

The rules of traditional hospitality regarding drinks are still applied today. The art of drinking is a social and physical skill which has to be learnt. Although no one is ever refused a drink of water, all other beverages, particularly alcohol, must be drunk according to strict regulations, whether the drinker is alone, with his family or at a public event.
