These moccasins, from the Algonquian word makasin, worn by both men and women, are made from tanned, smoked deerskin. The flaps and the uppers are decorated with geometrical patterns made from flattened, dyed porcupine quills. Moccasins with soft soles were worn mostly by the Amerindians living in the forests in the east.
