NO’PHOTO, Biennale de la photographie à Genève, s’élargit en 2019 avec plus d’une centaine de photographes dans une vingtaine de lieux, deux semaines d’expositions et de rencontres, ainsi qu’une grande nocturne de projections et d’animations. Organisée par le Département de la culture et du sport de la Ville de Genève (DCS), cette quinzaine met en lumière la vitalité de la création genevoise en matière de photographie. La politique de soutien à la scène locale trouve ainsi un écho et un espace de valorisation. Le portrait, l’un des genres majeurs de la photographie, trouve sa place dans la nocturne sous forme de projections, mettant en lumière plusieurs pans des collections privées et municipales genevoises. L’espace public comme territoire de rencontre avec les citoyens devient un lieu d’expositions et d’installations. De nombreux partenaires sont en outre associés à ce jeune festival qui s’inscrit désormais dans un réseau photographique régional : la Nuit de la Photo de la Chaux–de-Fonds, renommée pour la qualité de ses projections ; les Journées photographiques de Bienne en une collaboration qui permet de croiser différentes enquêtes photographiques de la Suisse romande ; le Centre de la photographie Genève et la HEAD sont associés pour un programme original ; enfin, le musée de l’Elysée répond à une carte blanche sur le thème de l’enfance. NO’PHOTO accueille par ailleurs l’Association Espace JB qui propose un festival sur le thème de l’Amour dans le bâtiment industriel Arcoop, véritable événement dans l’événement. Une vingtaine de photographes suisses et internationaux y exposent et projettent des travaux des années soixante à aujourd’hui.
NO’PHOTO, the Photography Biennial in Geneva, is expanding in 2019 to include the work of over one hundred photographers in around twenty locations, two weeks of exhibitions and encounters, as well as a major night of screenings and events. Organised by the Department of Culture and Sport of the City of Geneva (DCS), this fortnight highlights the vitality of photographic creation in Geneva. Through it, the policy of support for the local scene finds both an echo and a promotion platform. The portrait, a major photographic genre, has its rightful place in the late-night event in the form of screenings, showcasing several facets of Geneva’s private and municipal collections. The public space as a civic meeting place becomes one of exhibitions and installations. Numerous partners are moreover associated with this young festival, now part of a regional photographic network: the Nuit de la Photo of La Chaux-de-Fonds, renowned for the quality of its screenings; the Biel/ Bienne Photography Days, in a partnership that unites the different photographic surveys of French-speaking Switzerland; the Centre de la photographie Genève and HEAD join forces for an original programme; lastly, the Musée de l’Elysée has been given carte blanche on the theme of childhood. NO’PHOTO also welcomes the Espace JB association, which proposes a celebration on the theme of Love in the Arcoop industrial building: an event within an event. Around twenty Swiss and international photographers will be exhibiting and screening works there dating from the 60s to the present-day.
Après le succès de la première édition de NO’PHOTO, biennale genevoise consacrée à la photographie, cette deuxième version de la manifestation s’est construite en prenant appui sur ses points forts – des partenariats porteurs, des projections thématiques – pour se déployer dans la durée et sur les cimaises.
La photographie, qu’elle soit documentaire ou artistique, est un art qui nous transporte dans l’irréel ou le fantasmé, qui nous confronte à la réalité, qui nous enrobe, nous englobe. NO’PHOTO propose de (re)découvrir des photographes genevois-es au talent émouvant, de faire dialoguer leur travail avec celui d’autres venu-e-s d’ailleurs. De partager nos découvertes, notre enthousiasme et nos réflexions dans une ambiance chaleureuse.
NO’PHOTO se place naturellement en axe central du plan de soutien et de valorisation de la photographie genevoise. Un plan qui vise à mettre en avant et à aider les photographes établi-e-s au bout du lac et dont aujourd’hui on commence à voir les fruits, dans le cadre de cette manifestation notamment.

After the success of the first NO’PHOTO event in 2017, this second Geneva photography biennial is founded on its strongpoints - flourishing partnerships and thematic projections – that extend over the long term and across the walls.
Photography, whether documentary or artistic, is an art that transports us to the realms of fiction or fantasy, but which also brings us face-to-face with reality, an art that envelops and encompasses us. NO’PHOTO is a chance to (re)discover Genevan photographers with moving talents, an opportunity to make their work dialogue with that of others from elsewhere and to share our discoveries, enthusiasm and reflections in a warm atmosphere.
NO’PHOTO is naturally central to the plan to support and promote Genevan photography. A plan that aims to showcase and assist photographers based in this city at the end of the lake, the fruits of which are now becoming visible, especially in the context of this event.
Is Geneva a city of photography? We have only to look at its history, note the public success of certain exhibitions and list the names of its local talented photographers to be persuaded of it.
Photography holds a place in Geneva today that it did not possess a few years ago. The idea of exhibiting it in the public space is certainly one of the reasons why. NO’PHOTO is another.
We will continue to strive so that this art, seen from either an artistic or documentary perspective, also serves to promote the image of our city far and wide, bringing its vital and illuminating contribution to the cultural life of Geneva and, more widely, to the constant (re)construction of our society.
